Würth Italy is the largest international subsidiary of the Würth Group and the market leader in assembly and fastening supplies. More than 25,000 items are stored at the logistics center in Capena, near Rome. Every day, between 15,000 and 16,000 picks are processed there, and approximately 5,000 packages are shipped.

Challenge

Before implementing NIMMSTA, Würth Italy was still using paper-based picking lists for order fulfillment.

This created several challenges:

  • Time-consuming manual processes
  • Lack of digital storage location validation
  • Higher susceptibility to errors during order picking
  • Additional verification steps due to weighing each order
  • Unnecessary movements due to paper lists and handheld scanners
  • Limited ergonomics for employees

With rising demands for efficiency and an increasingly older workforce, it became clear that a fully digital and ergonomic process was necessary.

Solution

  • Working with NIMMSTA and its integration partner engomo, Würth Italy digitized its entire pick-and-pack process as well as goods receiving.

    The NIMMSTA Smart Watch was seamlessly integrated with the KNAPP KiSoft Warehouse Control System (WCS) and completely replaces paper-based process management.

    The solution enables:

    • Digital order display right on the wrist
    • Scan-based process confirmation
    • Digital storage location and item validation
    • Hands-free operation without paper lists
    • Optimized multi-pick processes with reduced walking distances
    • Digital putaway processes in goods receiving

    End-to-end process management eliminates media breaks and virtually eliminates errors.

Implementation in the warehouse

The NIMMSTA solution is currently used in two key areas:

Pick & Pack

Employees receive their picking orders digitally on their smartwatch. The item, storage location, and quantity are displayed, and each step is confirmed with a scan.

Goods Receiving

Containers and storage locations are automatically assigned and also confirmed via scan. This results in a seamless and error-free material flow.

Results

30% fewer errors

Thanks to digital validation and scan-based process control, the error rate was reduced by 30%. At the same time, the number of cartons at the rework station decreased by approximately 300 per day.

Productivity –up to 10% higher productivity

Thanks to optimized walking routes, multi-pick logic, and digital process guidance, picking performance was increased by up to 10%.

Employee satisfaction – 76% do not want to go back to paper lists
