Significantly more efficiency at Munich Airport's logistics center.
"The easiest IT implementation of my life" - go-live in just 5 hours
eurotrade Flughafen München Handels-GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Munich Airport and is responsible for the entire retail business at the airport. With over 40 stores and the operation of the central logistics center, the company ensures that thousands of items arrive reliably, punctually and without errors directly at the terminals every day. Previously, employees worked with traditional MDE devices, which led to unnecessary delays and errors, especially in the high-bay warehouse with its high speed. The aim was now to make the process more efficient, error-free and ergonomic.

The smart watches are used in order picking.
As a subsidiary of Munich Airport, eurotrade Flughafen München Handels-GmbH operates over 40 stores of various categories and the central logistics center for the entire airport. To make manual processes more efficient, ergonomic and scalable, eurotrade relies on the NIMMSTA Smart Watch.
The solution provides measurable improvements, particularly for order picking: hands-free working, smooth processes and simple system integration - with full flexibility for future processes such as stocktaking or goods receipt. The next step is to equip the cross-docking and dispatch preparation areas with the Smart Watches.
Significantly more efficient picking without an MDE device. Employees work faster, more ergonomically and with consistent digital feedback.
Plug & play instead of an IT project: the implementation with CIM Prolag World was completed in just five hours.
Since their introduction, the smartwatches have been in continuous operation 365 days a year during the early and late shifts.
With the introduction of the NIMMSTA Smart Watches, the central core process was digitalized and optimized. The smartwatches are now in continuous use 365 days a year, from the early to the late shift. Around 1,200 orders with around 4,000 items are processed every day. The items are stored in pallet racks and loaded onto picking trolleys, which are then transported to the respective stores or supply units at the airport.
Previously, traditional MDE devices had to be picked up and put down for each scan, an error-prone, time-consuming and physically demanding process that added up to several hours a day.
The NIMMSTA Smart Watch has fundamentally changed this. Employees wear the Smart Watch directly on the back of their hand, in an ergonomically optimized position. The respective order is selected via the touch display, and the storage location, item information and quantities are clearly displayed on the screen. Immediate feedback follows the scan: visual, acoustic, haptic and, if necessary, with a correction note.
Since the introduction of the NIMMSTA Smart Watch, eurotrade has been able to make order picking in the high-bay warehouse significantly more efficient and error-free. Each scan is confirmed visually, acoustically and haptically, which noticeably reduces sources of error. The solution has also impressed employees: In an internal survey, which covered aspects such as ergonomics, modularity, handling and suitability for everyday use, the Smart Watch received top marks with an average of 9 out of 10 points.
The conclusion: a solution that measurably improves processes and fully convinces the team.
NIMMSTA was the easiest IT introduction of my life and I have really done a lot of introductions.
Direct replenishment and correction functions at the shelves increase process efficiency.
eurotrade uses the CIM Prolag World WMS. As NIMMSTA has long been fully integrated into the system, the go-live could be implemented extremely quickly. Thanks to the existing middleware, no new interfaces had to be programmed. Instead of a classic IT project, half a day was enough for the configuration, and productive use could start immediately afterwards.
The entire implementation was carried out internally by the eurotrade team, without an external system house and without lengthy coordination. For the logistics team, it was the most uncomplicated IT implementation they have ever experienced.
The next steps could be the introduction of further smart watches in processes such as cross-docking and shipping preparation:
Cross-docking
Deliveries arrive in the cross-docking zone that are not stored but handled directly. Speed and precision are crucial here: the items have to be identified, scanned and distributed to the appropriate delivery or picking trolley at lightning speed. Benedikt Nickels plans that with the NIMMSTA Smart Watch, employees in this area could achieve up to 100 scans per minute, a huge improvement on the devices currently in use. Hands remain free, movements are smoother and the scanning process can be carried out ergonomically and without wasting time.
Dispatch preparation
Once an order has been fully picked, the transfer to the shipping process could also be handled with NIMMSTA. The Smart Watch can provide employees with optimal support: the items are digitally completed, "married" to the corresponding delivery and prepared for transportation to the truck. The entire process is confirmed digitally and is immediately available in the system. This creates a continuous digital data flow from the storage location to the truck, with maximum transparency and traceability.
Our software analyses, controls and optimizes each work step in real time.
The individual steps for each task are displayed to the employee on the smart watch. Even in the desired language.
The LightTag provides visual support. It flashes and shows the worker the next step in a matter of seconds.
NIMMSTA is your partner for visible, measurable and controllable logistics processes.
Whether picking, sorting or inventory - our process solution makes the difference.
